Anambra Assembly Passes Resolution for Mandatory Use of Life Jackets on Waterways

In a bid to enhance safety on waterways, the Anambra State House of Assembly has unanimously endorsed a resolution urging Governor Chukwuma Soludo to mandate the use of life jackets across all water routes within the state. The decision, prompted by concerns over recent water-related accidents, aims to safeguard the lives of both passengers and operators.

Spearheaded by Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, the Majority Leader representing Ekwusigo constituency, the motion received overwhelming support from fellow lawmakers during deliberations. Citing constitutional provisions emphasizing the government’s duty to protect lives and property, Sir Ikenna stressed the critical importance of ensuring safety in maritime transportation.

The resolution also advocates for the provision and distribution of certified life jackets to all maritime businesses, coupled with stringent enforcement measures to ensure compliance. Lawmakers underscored the urgent need to address the lack of regulatory framework concerning life jacket usage, which has been identified as a significant factor contributing to water-related fatalities.

Highlighting the vulnerability of communities and businesses situated along riverine areas, Sir Ikenna emphasized the proactive role of compulsory life jacket regulations in mitigating risks and preventing loss of life. He further called for extensive public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the necessity of adhering to safety measures during water transportation.

Echoing support for the motion, Honourable Golden Iloh of Ihiala Constituency Two, Sir Ejike Okechukwu of Anaocha Constituency Two, and Honourable Noble Igwe of Ogbaru Constituency One lauded the initiative as a crucial step towards safeguarding the well-being of Anambra residents and fostering a secure maritime environment for businesses.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, formally announced the passage of the resolution, which received unanimous approval from lawmakers through a voice vote. This landmark decision reflects the commitment of the Anambra State government to prioritize public safety and enhance regulatory measures on water transportation.
