Awka, Nigeria — The Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, has urged stakeholders to collaborate with the state government in its ongoing transformation of the agricultural sector. The commissioner made this call during a press briefing to mark this year’s World Food Day, celebrated globally on October 16.
Emphasizing the importance of partnerships, Dr. Ihejiofor noted that stakeholder collaboration is crucial for fostering economic growth and improving the wellbeing of the state’s population. He called on communities, individuals, and organizations to actively contribute to global efforts aimed at achieving food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
“The theme of this year’s celebration, *‘Food for Better Life and Better Future,’* highlights the urgent need to create sustainable food systems and combat global hunger, which currently affects over 733 million people worldwide,” Ihejiofor stated.
He stressed that food security in Anambra is not just about availability but also includes factors like nutrition, safety, access, utilization, and stability. This, he said, is essential for the social and economic development of the state and reflects the government’s commitment to building resilient agricultural systems.
During the briefing, Ihejiofor outlined several initiatives undertaken by the state government to boost food security. These include the distribution of 2.2 million combined oil palm and staple crop seedlings to over 250,000 residents, aimed at enhancing food production and fostering sustainable economic growth in the agricultural value chain.
Key initiatives mentioned include the *“Farm to Feed”* campaign, various infrastructure projects, and workshops aimed at equipping farmers with modern agricultural techniques. Upcoming events such as farmers’ markets, a food security symposium, and community outreach programs are part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to support the sector.
“As we celebrate World Food Day, we must reaffirm our commitment to regenerative agricultural policies that protect the environment, increase productivity, and ensure access to nutritious food for all citizens,” Dr. Ihejiofor concluded.
In her remarks, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka, underscored the need for efficient use of the state’s limited agricultural land. She also highlighted the ministry’s activities to mark the day, including a road walk to raise awareness and a tour of backyard demonstration farms under the *“Farm to Feed”* program. She also mentioned the *“Healthy Living Initiative”* spearheaded by the State Governor’s wife, Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo, to promote better nutrition across Anambra.
