AWKA, Anambra State – In a major operation targeting human trafficking and criminal activity, the Anambra State government has shut down two brothels in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area, and rescued 27 underage girls forced into prostitution. The raid, conducted by the enforcement team of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade), also resulted in the arrest of 23 individuals suspected of various illegal activities.
The operation, led by OCHA Brigade Managing Director Comrade Celestine Anere, was prompted by numerous complaints and petitions regarding suspicious activities occurring at the locations. Investigations revealed the brothels were not only facilitating the trafficking of young girls for sexual exploitation but were also serving as havens for drug traffickers and criminal gangs involved in activities such as phone snatching.
Comrade Anere expressed deep concern for the rescued girls, who range in age from 13 to 17. He stated that they were exposed to a dangerous environment involving hard drugs and exploitative sexual practices.
Among those arrested, Chinwuba Mba, Chukwuka Okoye, and Emmanuel Chukwuebuka claimed innocence, asserting they were merely present at the wrong time and have legitimate, verifiable businesses in Anambra.
Testimonies from two of the rescued girls painted a grim picture of their circumstances. One girl revealed she was lured to the brothel with the promise of N50,000 to cover her mother’s hospital bills. Another, a single mother, explained she was driven to prostitution out of desperation to provide for her child. Their identities are being withheld to protect their privacy.
The Anambra State government’s action underscores its commitment to combating human trafficking, drug abuse, and other criminal activities within the state. Further investigations are underway, and authorities are expected to provide more details as the case progresses.
