Anambra Education Commissioner Reaffirms Commitment to Unmatched Academic Excellence

The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has reiterated the state government’s dedication to maintaining its leading position in academic excellence. Speaking at the 2024/2025 WAEC and Education Stakeholders Committee meeting in Awka, the commissioner outlined the state’s relentless efforts to sustain and surpass its achievements in education.

During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Education’s Conference Hall, Prof. Chuma-Udeh assured the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) team, led by Branch Controller Mr. Uduak-Akpan, that Anambra’s educational success remains a top priority. “We are not resting on our oars,” she stated, while outlining strategic measures aimed at further enhancing the state’s academic reputation.

One of the key initiatives discussed was the recruitment and deployment of qualified teachers to underserved areas, such as Anambra East, ensuring that all students have uninterrupted access to education throughout the academic year. “With the recent addition of 8,115 teachers, Anambra now exceeds both UNESCO and national teacher-student ratio guidelines,” Prof. Chuma-Udeh highlighted, marking this as a significant achievement for the state.

Other programs contributing to the state’s educational success include the annual teacher’s boot camp, periodic teacher assessments, competency-based capacity development programs, and the timely payment of three years’ counterpart funding for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). These efforts reflect the state’s commitment to maintaining top-tier performance in education.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh emphasized the importance of continuous professional development for educators, noting that these programs equip teachers with the latest pedagogical advancements and sharpen their skills.

Earlier, Mrs. Genevieve Chukwudi Nwoko, a WAEC facilitator, provided an in-depth analysis of factors contributing to the decline in student performance and offered recommendations to improve academic outcomes.

The meeting was attended by key education stakeholders, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Ifeoma Agbaizu, and the Director of Schools, Mrs. Ifeoma Onyeneke, underscoring the state’s unified approach to achieving academic excellence.
