Federal government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Environment has completed the planting of over 3,000 oil palm seedlings at the Nibo Awka erosion site, Awka south LGA, Anambra state.
The Completed project which has been handed over officially to the state Environment Commissioner Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu is the 2023 federal government project on phyto control and protection of erosion and marginal lands in Anambra state.
Speaking during the hand over, Mr Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr Felix Odimegwu stated that the poject came tiḿely as the erosion crisis in Anambra state has excalated to an alarming rate, leaving each each community in the 160 communities with one form of erosion or the other in the 179 communities in our dear state
Dr Odimegwu stated that the project will not only control erosion but will ensure ecosystem stability, food and agriculture security, economic benefits, climate regulation, protection of natural habitat, sustainable land/resource management, pollution and so many others.
The Commissioner affirmed that Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo led administration which prioritizes the environment a great deal will safeguard and nurture all the seedlings planted and also see to it’s sustainability.
One of the federal delegation members, Mr Igbinosa Osakide in his speech stated that as the seedlings mature to trees, an ecological restoration of shorelines and erosion control will be established. “This will also increase the states forest cover thereby contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation measures”.
Director of forestry, Mrs Achugamonye and Engr Ignatius were also present during the handover.
