Mrs. Nonye Soludo, wife of Anambra State Governor and founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, has launched a community-based vegetable garden program and weekly fitness activities across all 21 local government areas of Anambra State.
The launch, held at Idemili North Local Government Headquarters in Ogidi, marked the start of both initiatives, aimed at fostering sustainable agriculture and promoting a culture of healthy living. Each local government will receive support from Mrs. Soludo’s NGO to establish organic vegetable gardens at council secretariats, with crops including tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, peppers, pumpkin, and local herbs. The gardens will be managed by trained local workers under the guidance of local government officials’ spouses.
Mrs. Soludo stated that within three months, participating councils will set up farmers’ markets to sell fresh produce at affordable prices, addressing food accessibility and supporting organic consumption. The farmers’ markets are planned to open weekly across the state, aiming to reduce food costs, enhance agricultural education, and boost food production.
Additionally, Mrs. Soludo emphasized that the weekly exercise program seeks to build a community focused on physical health, providing a space for residents to connect and support each other in leading healthier lifestyles.
Idemili North Local Government Chairman, Mr. Stanley Nwoka, pledged full support for the initiatives, praising the First Lady’s efforts to drive positive change. Anambra’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, underscored that the programs are designed to benefit all age groups across the state.
The launch event saw attendance from Commissioner for Information Dr. Law Mefor, Commissioner for Special Duties Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, APGA State Chairman Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, and other notable officials.
