The Anambra State Government has commenced the distribution of 60,000 kegs of two-liter fertilizers donated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, launched the initiative at the Ministry of Agriculture in Awka, emphasizing that the donation is aimed at boosting farming activities, particularly dry-season farming. Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka, Dr. Ihejiofor revealed that 55 farmers were selected from each ward across 20 Local Government Areas, except Ayamelum, where 20 farmers per ward were chosen due to an earlier distribution of 9,000 bags of fertilizers in the area.
Dr. Ihejiofor assured that the distribution process is being closely monitored by agricultural supervisors to ensure proper usage. He commended the Federal and state governments for their support, urging beneficiaries to utilize the fertilizers effectively to maximize output.
During a practical demonstration, Mr. Godwin Akujieze, the Director of Technical Services in the Ministry, advised farmers to store the fertilizers in cool environments and apply them either early in the morning or late in the evening to achieve optimal results.
Beneficiaries, including Mrs. Uju Egbuji from Onitsha South and Mr. Chukwuma Olumba from Orumba South, expressed gratitude to the CBN and the state government, highlighting that the fertilizers would significantly enhance their productivity during the dry-season farming period.
