The Anambra State government has completed a pre-impact assessment of flood-prone communities in anticipation of the 2024 flooding season.
Hon. Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, the Anambra State Commissioner for Special Duties, announced this during an interview with ABS at her office in Awka, discussing the government’s preparations following the flood prediction for 2024.
Commissioner Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche expressed satisfaction with the water levels in the assessed council areas. She noted that the current administration is well-versed in the topography of these areas, which are often isolated by flooding during the rainy season. The roads under construction are designed to withstand these conditions.
Addressing complaints from residents about the late arrival of palliatives and accommodation in previous years, the Commissioner assured that the government will ensure timely interventions this year.
She emphasized that although Anambra falls within moderate flood risk zones, the ministry is working diligently to prepare riverine areas for potential high-risk flooding to prevent emergencies.
The ministry has held interactive sessions with stakeholders and residents in various councils to understand the challenges faced during flooding, the impacts of such events, and the effectiveness of government interventions. Based on these discussions, the ministry plans to review and enhance its flood response strategies.
Commissioner Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche urged residents to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary to protect lives and property.
Regarding urban flooding, the Commissioner criticized residents and developers who build on waterways, exacerbating flooding and property loss, and called for a change in behavior.
