The Anambra State Government has intensified its efforts to curb illegal sand mining, warning that violators will face strict prosecution. This comes after the enforcement team of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) apprehended five individuals involved in illegal sand mining activities in Ebenator, Nnewi South Local Government Area.
The site of the illegal operation was also sealed off, as the state government reiterated its ban on sand mining to protect the environment and promote sustainable practices.
The Managing Director of OCHA Brigade, Comrade Celestine Anere, expressed disappointment over the involvement of certain stakeholders in the illicit activity. He highlighted the ecological damage caused by unregulated sand mining and emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing international best practices for mining operations.
Comrade Anere also condemned harassment of OCHA staff during enforcement activities, warning that such acts would be met with severe consequences. He assured that the agency is actively monitoring mining activities, reviewing their impacts, and rehabilitating degraded areas to align with environmental regulations.
During the parade, some of the suspects, including Mr. Ubaka Ihuoha, Chijioke Obiora, and Nzubechukwu Adimonye, admitted their involvement and pleaded for leniency, claiming they were misled by their leader.
The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its resolve to protect the environment and ensure compliance with the law, urging citizens to report illegal activities to the appropriate authorities.
