The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CLOs) involved in extorting money from vulnerable citizens. The government has vowed to take legal action against any organization found guilty of such exploitation.
The warning was delivered by the Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, during a meeting with the state’s Multi-Stakeholders Action Committee on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention in Awka.
Commissioner Obinabo expressed concern over reports that some NGOs and CLOs, under the guise of offering support to vulnerable individuals and GBV survivors, demand registration fees ranging from N20,000 to N100,000. These fees, supposedly meant to facilitate justice, often lead to empty promises and no actual support.
She urged the committee to help ensure justice for the people of Anambra and provide a platform for the voiceless.
In response, the committee’s chairman, Igwe Pius Omachonu, the traditional ruler of Orumbanasa Community in Anambra West Local Government Area, informed the Commissioner that the committee had officially commenced its work after its inauguration. He also requested the ministry’s support in key areas to ensure the program’s success.
