The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to constructing a railway, revitalizing the seaport, and digitizing the transport sector to align with international standards.
State Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike, disclosed this during the opening of a three-day transport policy retreat at the Dr. Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka. The event, themed “Transport Policy and Planning for Sustainable Development,” brought together key stakeholders in the transport sector.
Commissioner Igwebuike emphasized that these initiatives aim to enhance transportation, boost the state’s economy, and improve its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). She called on relevant stakeholders to collaborate with the government in achieving a more efficient transport system.
Keynote speaker Dr. Aiban Igwe described the transport sector as a major driver of economic growth and stressed the importance of sustainable investment. He noted that the United Nations defines sustainable transportation as safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible mobility for people and goods.
In goodwill messages, President of the Chartered Institute of Transport, Abuja, Prince Shegun Obayendo, and Director of Library Information Services, Zaria, Dr. Felicia Nwanosike, praised the government’s efforts and urged stakeholders to support the initiative for meaningful progress in the transport sector.
