Mrs. Nonye Soludo, wife of the Anambra State Governor, emphasized the vital importance of breast milk as she kicked off the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week at the Primary Health Care Centre in Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area.
Mrs. Soludo highlighted that breastfeeding is a mother’s natural responsibility, crucial for the health and development of her baby. She advocated for exclusive breastfeeding, noting its significant health and emotional benefits for both mother and child. According to her, exclusive breastfeeding fosters a strong mother-child bond, helps prevent certain diseases, and is cost-effective.
In addition to promoting breastfeeding, Mrs. Soludo encouraged households to maintain organic gardens to combat food insecurity, promote healthy eating, and prevent diseases.
Dr. Afam Obidike, the Commissioner for Health, remarked that while Anambra State has made progress in promoting exclusive breastfeeding, there is still room for improvement. He emphasized the state’s commitment to increasing awareness and adoption of exclusive breastfeeding through ongoing free antenatal care and delivery services.
Pharmacist Chisom Uchem, Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ASPHCDA), underscored this year’s World Breastfeeding Week theme, “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all.” She called for heightened efforts to educate women on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the betterment of their children’s health and development.
During the event, Mrs. Soludo distributed free organic seeds as part of her seeds program. The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, was also present at the ceremony.
