Anambra Information Commissioner, Dr. Law Mefor, Advocates Enhanced Security Measures During Visit to Police Commissioner

On Monday, October 28, 2024, Dr. Law Mefor, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, paid a courtesy visit to Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, aimed at strengthening collaboration to enhance the security landscape in Anambra State.

During the meeting held at the Police Commissioner’s office in Amawbia, Dr. Mefor emphasized the importance of profiling and training for vigilante operatives under police guidance. According to Dr. Mefor, this step would improve information flow and bolster the operatives’ ability to respond effectively to emerging security challenges.

“I felt the need to see you. As the government’s spokesperson, I often address security issues. We need to ensure we’re aligned on matters of security,” Dr. Mefor stated. He praised the police for their efforts in combating crime but expressed concern over the evolving nature of security threats in the state, emphasizing the need for proper training of vigilantes in both psychological readiness and weapon handling. “If vigilante operatives are well-constituted and trained by the police, they can become an effective extension of the police in community policing,” he added.

In response, CP Itam expressed appreciation for the visit and highlighted his commitment to improving security across the state. He called on the people of Anambra to continue supporting the police, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital for effective policing.

CP Itam also revealed plans for a new radio program, “Ask the Police,” in collaboration with Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS). This weekly program will allow DPOs and other senior officers to interact directly with residents, enhancing transparency and public trust in law enforcement.

The visit underscores a shared dedication between the Anambra State government and the police to establish a safer and more secure environment for all.
