The Anambra State Judiciary has initiated an investigation into allegations of bribery involving a magistrate, following claims made by a lawyer that his client was denied bail for refusing to pay a N20,000 bribe. The lawyer made the accusation in a video that has since gone viral on social media.
According to findings, the incident reportedly occurred at Magistrate Court 3 in Amawbia, contrary to the lawyer’s claim that it took place in Awka. Efforts to identify and contact the lawyer have so far been unsuccessful.
In response to the allegations, the State Judiciary issued a press release on Sunday, confirming its awareness of the video and stating its commitment to investigating the claims thoroughly. The press release, signed by the Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR), P.C. Udeorah, Esq., emphasized that the Judiciary takes such accusations seriously and will ensure that any judicial officer found guilty of unethical behavior will face appropriate consequences.
The statement read: “To this end, we have already initiated communications with the Learned Chief Magistrate and court staff mentioned. Efforts are being made to reach the lawyer who raised the allegation. We ask the public to allow investigations to proceed without prejudice, and we remain committed to upholding justice and maintaining public trust.”
The Judiciary assured the public that the investigation will be conducted impartially, and any misconduct discovered will be addressed to maintain the integrity of the judicial system in Anambra State.
