Awka, Anambra State – The Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Anambra State Council, Dr. Benedict Agbogu, has called on the Federal and State Governments to introduce welfare programmes for the families of fallen heroes and veterans. He emphasized that such initiatives would encourage optimum performance among service members.
Dr. Agbogu made this appeal during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
Expressing gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for allocating six plots of land for the construction of a secretariat for the council, Dr. Agbogu urged the state government to sustain its support for veterans through enhanced welfare packages. This, he noted, would empower veterans to provide better care for the families of fallen heroes.
He highlighted that the occasion not only honors personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police who lost their lives in service but also celebrates veterans and seeks moral and financial support for the families left behind.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, underscored the significance of January 15 as a day to honor the sacrifices made by the armed forces for the unity, peace, and sovereignty of Nigeria. Similarly, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Agha Mba, commended the military for its role in ensuring the country’s survival and urged residents of Anambra to embrace security as a collective responsibility.
The event featured ceremonial parades by members of the armed forces and the laying of wreaths by Governor Chukwuma Soludo and security chiefs in the state.
