The Anambra State Government has commemorated the 2025 World AIDS Day with a renewed commitment to support people living with HIV. Through the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, officials announced that anyone who tests positive in the state will be enrolled into the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency to ensure seamless access to free antiretroviral drugs and related care.
At the event themed “Overcoming Disruptions: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” Commissioner for Health Afam Obidike reminded residents that HIV remains present and urged them to take preventive measures, including abstaining from unprotected sex or using condoms. He encouraged the public to access free HIV testing available in health facilities across the state.
Obidike explained that the automatic enrolment of newly diagnosed individuals into the state’s health insurance scheme is aimed at guaranteeing a steady supply of necessary medications and improving treatment outcomes.
Executive Director of ANSACA John-Bosco Ementa said the annual observance serves to honour those living with HIV and those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. He cautioned against stigmatizing individuals affected by the virus. Ementa added that the agency carried out a road show and sensitization activities to raise awareness and remind residents that the disease still exists and that affected persons are not alone.
Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service Chris Molokwu described the initiative as a strong demonstration of the state government’s commitment to public health under Governor Chukwuma Soludo. He noted that adequate provisions have been made for testing, counseling, and HIV management, and assured that the station will continue partnering with the government to promote awareness and education.
