The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Multi-Stakeholders Action Committee on Prevention of Gender-Based Violence (MAP-GBV), has organized a roadshow to raise awareness about the dangers of gender-based violence (GBV). The event was part of activities marking the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
The rally, supported by ActionAid, began at Arroma Junction and passed through Nkwo Amaenyi Market and Eke-Awka, concluding at UNIZIK Junction in Awka. Participants, including representatives from various ministries and agencies, distributed flyers and engaged the public on the importance of recognizing and reporting GBV to ensure justice.
Addressing the public, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, stressed that acts such as domestic violence, child abuse, rape, and denial of widows’ rights are criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment. She urged everyone to refrain from such acts and to speak up against abuses.
The State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mr. Obinna Mmaduforo, and the Chairman of the Muslim arm of MAP-GBV, Al Imam Sheriff Olanrewaju, emphasized that the 16 Days of Activism, which began on November 25 and will end on December 10, coincide with Human Rights Day. They commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his continued support in addressing GBV issues in the state.
Mrs. Suzana Adibe, a resident of Awka, praised the initiative but highlighted the need for increased awareness campaigns in rural areas, where cases of intimidation against women remain prevalent. She called for sustained efforts to address these social challenges at the grassroots level.
The rally served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to eliminate gender-based violence and promote justice and equality across Anambra State.
