Anambra Naval Officer Okafor Appointed Judge for International Ship Design Competition

Lieutenant David Chukwudera Okafor, a Nigerian Naval Officer from Ogbunike, Anambra State, has been selected to serve as a judge for the 2023-2024 International Ship Design Competition. This prestigious event, organized by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association, aims to prevent ferry fatalities and promote safe ferry operations globally, particularly in developing regions.

As part of his role, Lt. Okafor will design the 2023-2024 terms of reference for a RoPax ferry intended for the Niger River waterway in Nigeria. This ferry will be designed to accommodate 150-200 passengers, with space for cargo and 15-20 four-wheel vehicles, including lorries and trucks. The ferry routes will connect Onitsha Jetty to Idah Jetty and Onitsha Jetty to Ndoni Jetty, addressing the critical issue of unsafe transportation of passengers and cargo in the region.

Lieutenant Okafor brings over a decade of experience in ship design, marine technology, and project management to his role. As a Naval Architect and Project Manager at Naval Dockyard Limited, he has led numerous innovative marine projects, ensuring compliance with international standards and optimizing production efficiency.

His academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture from the State University of New York, Maritime College, USA, and a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Hull, UK. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, UK. Lt. Okafor is also a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and a member of various professional bodies, including COREN, NSE, NIIA, and SNAME.

Lt. Okafor’s contributions to the Nigerian Navy have been recognized with several awards, including the Chief of the Naval Staff Commendation award certificate in 2023 for his role in the design and construction of Nigerian Navy Ships. His commitment to environmental sustainability and safety in marine projects is well-regarded, and he is celebrated in Anambra State as a role model.
