The Anambra State Government has announced a collaboration with Solidaridad West Africa, an international nonprofit organization, to enhance aquaculture development and train fish farmers as part of efforts to revolutionize the state’s agricultural economy.
The partnership was finalized during a meeting between the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, and representatives of Solidaridad. Dr. Ihejiofor emphasized the importance of fish production in improving nutrition and healthy living, noting that the state is committed to creating an enabling environment for aquaculture growth.
Key initiatives under the collaboration include the training of 175 fish farmers across six local government areas—Anaocha, Awka South, Nnewi North, Idemmili North, Onitsha South, and Aguata—with plans to expand to 750 beneficiaries. The program will also equip farmers with smoking kilns, water testing kits, and technical support.
Additionally, 15 female youths will be trained and empowered under the state’s “One Youth, Two Skills” initiative.
Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, stressed the need for proper trainee selection to ensure program success, while Solidaridad’s Programme Manager, Mr. Ken Onukwube, reaffirmed their commitment to skill development and sectoral growth.
Rehabilitation of the ministry’s hatchery for optimal use is already underway, signaling a proactive step toward sustainable aquaculture in Anambra.
