The Anambra State House of Assembly has enacted the Homeland Security Law 2025, establishing the Agunechemba security outfit and introducing a robust framework to combat insecurity across the state.
Speaking after the bill’s passage, Sir Ejike Okechukwu, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, praised the law as a transformative measure aimed at restoring confidence in the state’s safety systems. He highlighted the delegation of key responsibilities to Presidents General of communities, empowering them to submit monthly reports on suspicious activities, criminal incidents, and intelligence. These reports will also include details such as the identities and whereabouts of individuals suspected of criminal involvement.
The law mandates hoteliers, landlords, and property owners to install modern surveillance systems, including CCTV cameras, and ensure proper documentation of guests and tenants. Additionally, properties linked to illicit drug manufacturing will face outright seizure.
Sir Ejike emphasized that the law holds religious leaders accountable for crimes committed within their establishments, ensuring strict oversight across various societal sectors.
The Majority Leader, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, and Hon. Tony Muobike of Aguata Constituency Two commended the law, noting that it introduces severe punishments for offenses while reinforcing community and institutional accountability.
