A joint security team in Anambra State has successfully secured the release of Reverend Father Stephen Echezona, who was abducted at a fuel station in Ichida. The rescue operation, which took place in the early hours of March 23, 2025, was carried out by the Police, Military, Civil Defence, and local vigilante groups from Ichida and Ihiala.
The armed criminals, who operated in a white Lexus SUV without a license plate, engaged the security operatives in a gun duel before abandoning the vehicle and taking the priest hostage. In a coordinated pursuit, security teams across the state were alerted, leading to the criminals releasing the priest in Ihiala and fleeing into a nearby bush.
The police have taken control of the scene in Ihiala, intensifying efforts to apprehend the suspects and recover the Toyota Highlander belonging to the priest.
Further updates on the investigation will be provided by the authorities.
