In a significant development, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has announced that the state has attained the second-lowest incidence rate of malaria in Nigeria.
Dr. Obidike made this announcement during a press briefing held at his office in Awka.
Highlighting the progress, the health commissioner stated that Anambra currently boasts a mere five percent prevalence rate, positioning it as the second-lowest state in the country, following Lagos, which holds the lowest rate at three percent. He emphasized the relentless efforts being made to further decrease malaria incidence, aiming for Anambra to claim the top spot as the state with the lowest malaria prevalence in Nigeria.
Moreover, Dr. Obidike revealed a remarkable decline in malaria-related deaths among children under five, citing statistics from the District Health Information System (DHIS). The mortality rate has plummeted from 3.6% in 2022 to a mere 0.96% in 2023, signifying substantial progress in the fight against the disease.
Acknowledging the government’s proactive measures in healthcare, Dr. Obidike highlighted initiatives such as providing free antenatal and delivery services for pregnant women. He reported over 6,000 deliveries with only one recorded death since the implementation of these services, underscoring the state’s commitment to maternal health.
Furthermore, the commissioner outlined ambitious plans to enhance primary healthcare infrastructure across the state. The government aims to establish fully equipped primary healthcare centers in all 326 political wards of Anambra, equipped with solar-powered lighting systems.
Looking ahead, Dr. Obidike unveiled upcoming initiatives, including the introduction of human papillomavirus drugs for cervical cancer prevention, spearheaded by the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo. These efforts underscore the state’s dedication to building a robust healthcare system that prioritizes preventive care and disease management.
In addition, Dr. Obidike revealed plans to revamp the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, aiming for enhanced infrastructure and service delivery that meets global standards.
