In a move to facilitate local government elections, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Anambra State Electoral Amendment Bill, 2024. This bill, which amends the existing electoral law, swiftly went through its first, second, and third readings today and has taken immediate effect.
The Majority Leader and Member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, highlighted the bill’s importance during the debate. He stated that the amendment reflects the state’s and Assembly’s commitment to expediting the local government elections as required. The changes are designed to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process for the people of Anambra.
The bill also received strong support from Honourable Noble Igwe, representing Ogbaru Constituency One, and Honourable Patrick Udoba, representing Anambra West. Both legislators emphasized the timeliness of the amendment, considering the urgent need to conduct local government elections.
The Speaker, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, read out the bill, which was then passed by voice votes from the lawmakers.
