The Anambra State government has initiated the urgent evacuation of residents living in riverine communities due to rising water levels in the River Niger and River Benue, which have caused widespread flooding. Affected areas include Ogbaru, Anambra West, and Ayamelum local government areas.
During a visit to Atani in Ogbaru LGA on Friday, our correspondent observed that the flood had brought all activities in the community to a halt. The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Paul Odenigbo, confirmed that the flooding began on Wednesday, prompting the state government to act swiftly.
“As an emergency response agency, we have provided the necessary support to relocate people to safer areas,” Odenigbo told journalists in Awka. Plans are in place to use boats to evacuate over 3,000 residents willing to move to higher ground.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo has also ensured that essential supplies, including blankets, mattresses, and hygiene products, have been distributed to holden camps set up in Ogbaru, Anambra West, and Ayamelum. The camps are equipped with conveniences and water supply to support displaced residents during their stay.
Odenigbo advised the public to heed warnings from relevant agencies and pack essential items such as documents, medications, and certificates as they prepare for relocation. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency had previously issued a fresh alert on Thursday, urging communities along coastal lines to relocate immediately.
