The Anambra State Government, in partnership with the European Union Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme, has concluded a week-long meeting to assess the achievements and challenges of its Anti-Corruption Committee during the first phase of the initiative. The meeting, held at Finotel Hotel, Awka, aimed to strengthen the committee’s functionality and enhance transparency in governance.
In her opening remarks, the Head of Service (HOS), Barr. Okwy Igwegbe, represented by Thessy Obuekwe, Administrator-General/Public Prosecutor for Anambra State, urged participants to identify gaps in the four-year-long first phase and adopt proactive measures against corrupt practices. She emphasized the importance of working closely with the Anti-Corruption Secretariat, stressing the need for due process and rule of law without resorting to witch-hunting or confrontational approaches.
The State Project Coordinator for RoLAC, Mrs. Josephine Onah, welcomed participants and highlighted the introduction of the Anambra State Anti-Corruption Strategy, a document designed to address the shortcomings of the first phase while ensuring improved outcomes in the second. She noted that RoLAC operates in 36 countries with a mission to promote good governance for the benefit of the public.
Dr. Ada Igboekwe, Lead Consultant for RoLAC and the Anti-Corruption Strategy, commended the state government’s commitment to curbing corruption and encouraged committee members to aim for accountability, transparency, and equity in governance.
The meeting marked the beginning of RoLAC’s second phase in Anambra, underscoring the government’s dedication to fostering a corruption-free administration for the betterment of the state.
