The Anambra State Eye Care Center, established through a partnership between the state government and the Nise community, has marked a successful 18 months of operation. Since its inception, the center has provided essential eye care services to over 2,500 patients and performed 30 life-changing surgeries, making it the first specialist eye care and referral facility in the state.
Dr. Ikenna Mbakigwe, the Chief Ophthalmologist at the center, highlighted the comprehensive services offered, which include the diagnosis and treatment of allergic eye conditions, dry eye disease, refractive errors, hypertensive and diabetic eye disorders, as well as glaucoma care, cataract surgeries, and ocular surface surgeries.
“Our center is staffed by two ophthalmologists, a chief optometrist, optometrist interns, nurses, and support personnel, all dedicated to delivering quality care,” Dr. Mbakigwe explained. However, he noted that the facility faces critical challenges, particularly a lack of solar power and consistent water supply, which impact its operations.
Emphasizing the importance of continuous staff training, especially for ophthalmic nurses, Dr. Mbakigwe pointed out the need for specialized equipment and advanced training for ophthalmologists and optometrists to keep up with the latest developments in eye care.
He applauded the state government’s commitment to reducing blindness and visual impairment but appealed for further support to equip the center with high-tech tools and ongoing professional development for staff. Dr. Mbakigwe assured the community of the center’s dedication to delivering top-tier eye care services and filling a crucial gap in eye health resources within Anambra State.
