Anambra State Government Cracks Down on Illegal Structures Blocking Drainages in Nkpor

The Anambra State Government has launched an environmental monitoring task force to address illegal structures blocking drainage systems in Akuzo, Nkpor, located in the Idemili North Local Government Area. The exercise, led by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ANSPPB), aims to combat flooding caused by such obstructions.

During the inspection, the Executive Secretary of ANSPPB, Mr. Stephen Ezenwa, revealed that several structures were built over existing drainage channels, impeding the free flow of water. This blockage has led to severe flooding in the area, preventing residents from accessing their homes and damaging properties worth millions of naira.

Ezenwa explained that the Board had previously issued warnings and served removal notices to the developers, but no action was taken. As a result, the government proceeded with the demolition of the offending structures. He further warned that the state government would not hesitate to arrest and penalize any individuals who build on drainage systems or fail to obtain proper building permits.

“Developers must always consult the Board and obtain the necessary approvals before constructing any structure,” Ezenwa emphasized, stressing that building without approval is illegal in Anambra State.

The state government’s action is part of a broader effort to mitigate flooding and ensure proper urban planning across the region.
