Anambra State Government Introduces Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Unit

Awka, Anambra State – Governor Chukwuma Soludo has launched the Anambra State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Unit (ASHEFAMU) and its electronic platform. The launch event, held in Awka, saw the governor represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike.

Dr. Obidike highlighted that about 80% of Ndi Anambra utilize private healthcare facilities, making ASHEFAMU crucial for government oversight of all health facilities in the state. Governor Soludo noted that Anambra is the second state after Lagos to establish such a unit, emphasizing that ASHEFAMU will enhance efficiency and help residents identify registered hospitals, thereby reducing quackery.

The governor expressed gratitude to those who worked tirelessly to ensure the unit’s success and thanked the World Health Organization (WHO) for its ongoing support. He encouraged Ndi Anambra to visit the ASHEFAMU website to check for accredited hospitals and provide feedback.

Commissioner for Industry, Mr. Christian Udechukwu, described the initiative as a battle against medical malpractice and urged residents to utilize the new system for better healthcare.

Hon. Tony Muobike, Chairman of the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Health, stated that ASHEFAMU is vital for achieving Governor Soludo’s health vision for the state.

WHO Coordinator for Anambra State, Dr. Bonos Mohammed, conveyed that ASHEFAMU will protect residents from unqualified practitioners and assured continued partnership with the state.

Goodwill messages were also delivered by key health officials, including the Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Pharmacist Chisom Uchem; Managing Director of the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi; and representatives from the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Anambra State chapter.

The event was attended by notable figures such as the Permanent Secretary of the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo, and the State Head of Medical Services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu.
