In line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to improving the welfare of the elderly, the Anambra State Government has inaugurated a Technical Team on Ageing. The team, led by Nigeria’s former Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Iyom Josephine Anenih, aims to advance the well-being of senior citizens across the state.
Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon. Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, officially inaugurated the team, which consists of members from the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) Consultative Forum on Ageing for Anambra State and the Ministry of Special Duties. The team is tasked with developing and domesticating the National Senior Citizens Centre Act and National Policy on Ageing within Anambra State.
Commissioner Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche expressed confidence in the expertise of the team and its ability to fulfill Governor Soludo’s vision of a society that prioritizes the elderly. She highlighted the importance of the team’s work in aligning with federal efforts to improve elderly care through the National Senior Citizens Centre.
Iyom Anenih, who also founded the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation (ADF), praised the state government for taking a significant step toward addressing the needs of older citizens. She emphasized the importance of involving everyone in elderly welfare and assured that the team will engage widely with stakeholders to develop a sustainable state policy that supports the well-being of senior citizens.
The Anambra State Technical Team on Ageing is expected to provide guidance on matters relating to the rights and welfare of older persons and advise the state government on implementing the National Senior Citizens Centre Act and Policy on Ageing at the state level.
