The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning to town criers and other individuals misrepresenting the provisions of the newly enacted Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025. The government expressed concern over the spread of false information, which it says is causing confusion and could potentially incite public unrest.
In a public notice signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the government highlighted instances where town criers had misquoted the law, including claims that individuals wearing dreadlocks, sagging trousers, or women not wearing bras and pants would be arrested. The government clarified that such statements are entirely false and do not reflect the provisions of the law.
“These misleading statements are neither part of the new law nor a directive from the state government. The Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025 has nothing to do with dress codes. Such misinformation is fabricated and intended to incite the public against the law and the government’s efforts to ensure security and peace in the state,” the statement read.
The government emphasized that the primary focus of the new law is to combat criminality and eliminate the activities of evil native doctors, sorcerers, and idolaters who prepare harmful charms and potions such as Oke-Ite and Odeshi, which embolden criminals to commit violent crimes like robbery and kidnapping. The law also supports the state’s security initiatives, including *Agunechemba* and *Operation Udo Ga-Achi*, aimed at purging the state of criminal elements.
To prevent further misinformation, the government has directed town criers to consult their communities’ Presidents-General before disseminating any messages. Presidents-General have also been warned that they will be held accountable for any misrepresentation of the law or the objectives of *Agunechemba* and *Operation Udo Ga-Achi*.
“When in doubt, Presidents-General should consult the government, particularly the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, to ensure accurate information is shared with the public,” the statement added.
The Anambra State Government urged all stakeholders to treat the notice with the seriousness it deserves, emphasizing that the spread of false information undermines the state’s efforts to maintain security and public order.
