In a bid to tackle the rising insecurity challenges, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Homeland Security Bill 2025, which establishes the Agunechemba Security Outfit aimed at ensuring internal security and order across the state.
The bill, which was passed during today’s plenary session after successful readings of its first, second, and third stages, paves the way for the creation and operation of the Agunechemba outfit. This new security force will operate at three levels: community, local government, and state, with the central command at the state level.
Speaking on the bill, the Majority Leader and Member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, emphasized that Anambra will no longer be a haven for insecurity and crime. He highlighted that the Agunechemba outfit will focus on gathering intelligence, preventing crime, and addressing major security threats, including kidnapping, banditry, cultism, armed robbery, and drug abuse.
Supporting the bill, other members such as Barrister Jude Ngobili of Ihiala Constituency One, Sir Ejike Okechukwu of Anaocha Constituency Two, and Honourable Anayo Okpaleke of Aguata Constituency One, all expressed confidence in the outfit’s potential to protect the lives and property of Anambra residents.
The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, commended the Assembly for its dedicated efforts in addressing the state’s security issues and thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his continued commitment to making Anambra a safe place.
The bill will come into force today, Friday, January 17, 2025.
