Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission Bill, 2024 Passes Second Reading

The Anambra State House of Assembly has advanced the State Independent Electoral Commission Bill, 2024, passing it through its second reading. This executive bill, presented by the Majority Leader Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, aims to establish a solid framework for conducting local government elections, thereby promoting democratic governance at the grassroots level.

Sir Ikenna, who represents the Ekwusigo Constituency, led the debate on the bill. He highlighted its primary objective: to create a transparent and efficient electoral system that empowers local communities. He noted the governor’s commitment to making Anambra State a model of governance, emphasizing that the bill’s implementation would directly benefit citizens.

Support for the bill came from several House members, including Honourable Noble Igwe of Ogbaru Constituency One, Barrister Obi Nweke of Anambra East Constituency, and Honourable Johnmark Ikwunne of Awka North Constituency. They underscored the bill’s potential to transform local governance by bridging the gap between the government and the people, promoting inclusivity, and fostering development at the grassroots.

Honourable Fred Ezenwa of Onitsha Constituency One, Honourable Anayo Okpaleke of Aguata Constituency One, and Honourable Emma Nwafor and Honourable Nkechi Ogbuefi of Orumba South and Anaocha Constituency One, respectively, stressed the importance of local government leaders. They argued that these leaders are closest to the people and best understand their needs and concerns.

Further support came from Honourable Patrick Udoba of Anambra West Constituency, Dr. Jude Akpua of Njikoka Constituency Two, and Barrister Patrick Okafor of Onitsha North Constituency Two. They called for the bill’s speedy passage, highlighting that a robust local government system would significantly promote community development.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, assured continued support for the executive branch to ensure the governor’s promises to Ndi Anambra are fulfilled. He read the bill for the second time, receiving broad support from the lawmakers.
