The Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health (SMOH) and international partners, has officially launched an integrated measles vaccination campaign. The kick-off event took place at Okpuno Primary Healthcare Centre in Awka South Local Government Area, marking the beginning of a statewide vaccination drive scheduled to run from November 6 to November 12, 2024.
During the flag-off ceremony, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, encouraged Anambra residents to ensure that children aged nine to 59 months receive the measles vaccine, providing crucial protection against the disease. He reassured parents that immunization services are always available free of charge at health facilities across the state.
Addressing potential concerns about Adverse Effects Following Immunization (AEFI), Dr. Obidike noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners have provided resources and training to manage any adverse reactions.
Pharm Chisom Uchem, Executive Secretary of ASPHCDA, emphasized that immunization, antenatal care, and delivery services are offered at no cost in government facilities. She urged families to report any instances of being charged for these services, underscoring the importance of vaccinations in preventing diseases.
The WHO South East Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, praised the state’s commitment to public health. He highlighted the vaccination campaign as a critical component of primary healthcare, a foundation for health security and progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We’re witnessing a strong partnership among the community, the government, and development partners,” Dr. Igboekwu stated. He reaffirmed WHO and partners’ support, including UNICEF, NPHCDA, AFENET, and CHAI, for Anambra’s health initiatives.
Representing the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Mr. McDonald Ugwu commended the efforts of ASPHCDA, SMOH, and supporting organizations. He called on parents to vaccinate their children, aiming for a measles-free Anambra and Nigeria.
The event included health talks from key state health officials, and was attended by dignitaries, including Okpuno’s Traditional Ruler, Igwe Engr Sunday I Okafor, and other local leaders and partners.
