In anticipation of the upcoming Integrated Measles Vaccination Campaign, Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has assured the public of the safety of the vaccines, emphasizing that they undergo a rigorous vetting process before being approved for use in the state and across Nigeria.
Dr. Obidike made this statement during a one-day town hall meeting with key stakeholders, organized by the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA) in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and other partners. The meeting, which aimed to promote the measles vaccination campaign, was attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union leaders, civil society organizations, women and youth leaders, and representatives from international health organizations such as UNICEF, WHO, and AFENET.
During the event, the Commissioner highlighted the importance of vaccination, noting that healthcare workers have been trained to manage any potential adverse effects following immunization. He urged stakeholders to spread the message about the importance of vaccinating children against measles.
“Measles is a deadly disease, and it is our responsibility as community leaders to ensure our people are well-informed and do not miss the opportunity to protect their children,” Dr. Obidike stated.
Pharm Chisom Uchem, Executive Secretary of ASPHCDA, noted that the town hall meeting was crucial in enlightening the participants about the importance of the upcoming vaccination campaign. She emphasized the role of stakeholders as “immunization ambassadors” who can help dispel misinformation and ensure widespread participation in the campaign.
Representatives from the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and UNICEF praised the ongoing efforts to promote immunization in the state and urged for continued cooperation to achieve the target of 95% vaccination coverage, leaving no eligible child unimmunized.
Traditional rulers and religious leaders, including His Royal Majesty Igwe Charles C. Agbala of Uke and CAN Chairman Ven. Joseph Nweke, pledged their support, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring the success of the vaccination campaign within their communities.
The measles vaccination campaign is expected to commence soon across Anambra State, with hopes of achieving high coverage and protecting children from the deadly disease.
