The Anambra State Government has reiterated its dedication to combating hunger and promoting food security across the state. During the 2024 New Yam Festival in Omor, Ayamelum Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Entertainment, Comrade Don Onyenji, emphasized the government’s strategy of encouraging farming by providing essential agricultural inputs to the people.
Comrade Onyenji highlighted the significance of the annual New Yam Festival, noting that it is a tradition the state government actively supports due to its cultural importance and its role in promoting agricultural practices among Ndi Anambra.
The ceremonial cutting of the yam, a key part of the festival, was performed by Igwe Chris Chidume, who underscored the festival’s importance to the Igbo people, particularly the Omor community. He prayed for continued development in the agrarian community, urging progress in critical infrastructure projects such as roads, water, and electricity.
The event drew a wide array of dignitaries, including traditional rulers from within and outside Anambra State, Senator Tony Nwoye representing Anambra North, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, and Acting Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Kate Omenugha. The celebration also featured traditional homage to Igwe Omor and vibrant cultural displays.
