As part of ongoing efforts to celebrate Anambra’s culture and achievements under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment, and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, highlighted key initiatives on Anambra Broadcasting Service’s “Ask the Commissioner” radio program. Alongside Information Commissioner Dr. Law Mefor, Comrade Onyenji spoke about the upcoming 2024 Anambra New Yam Festival, which combines the New Yam and Mmanwu (masquerade) festivals, set for this Saturday.
Describing the New Yam Festival as Igboland’s most iconic celebration, Onyenji emphasized its role in uniting communities, renewing relationships, and strengthening cultural identity. This year, prizes will be awarded to the producers of the biggest yam tubers, a tradition Governor Soludo began by awarding N1 million to last year’s top farmer. Each local government area is expected to bring at least one masquerade, adding to the cultural richness of the event.
The Commissioner also praised efforts to promote the Igbo language and cultural attire, noting Governor Soludo’s support through his signature Akwaete cloth and Anambra-made shoes, and the Information Commissioner Dr. Mefor’s advocacy for traditional Igbo symbols like the red cap. He applauded Mrs. Nonye Soludo’s campaign encouraging homemade foods and discouraged practices such as lavish burials and disrespectful behavior by undertakers.
Onyenji noted Anambra’s progress in tourism with projects like the Solution Fun City, set to become one of the region’s premier attractions. He highlighted the state’s leadership in Nigeria’s film industry and plans to re-establish ANAWOOD, aiming to position Anambra as a top cultural and cinematic hub.
Dr. Mefor encouraged all Ndi Anambra to join this year’s New Yam Festival, underscoring its significance as a celebration of tradition and community.
