The Anambra State Government is set to hold the second edition of its annual New Yam Festival on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka.
This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Entertainment, Comrade Don Onyenji, during an interactive program titled “Issues in Awka” aired on ABS.
During the program, Comrade Onyenji emphasized the significant role of tourism in generating revenue for both the government and the community, highlighting that the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration is dedicated to promoting the tourism sector within the state.
The upcoming festival is expected to feature a variety of cultural celebrations, including parades by local government areas, traditional wrestling, and a cash prize of one million naira for the “Di Ji 2024” competition, among other attractions.
The Commissioner noted the government’s impressive efforts in enhancing the tourism sector through infrastructure improvements, such as road constructions and the renovation of tourist sites, including Ogbunike Cave, Owerri-Ezukala Waterfalls, and Igboukwu Museum, as well as the establishment of new attractions like Solution Fun City Awka.
Comrade Onyenji urged Ndi Anambra and all residents to come out in large numbers to experience the vibrant and entertaining festivities of the 2024 New Yam Festival at Ekwueme Square.
