Anambra State to Elevate COOUTH to Top Teaching Hospital Status

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has announced the completion of all necessary arrangements to upgrade Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) in Awka to a standard teaching hospital.

This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, during a management meeting with the Chief Medical Director and Heads of Departments at the hospital. Dr. Obidike emphasized that Governor Soludo’s healthcare agenda aims to transform government healthcare centers for optimal service delivery and achieve universal health coverage for all residents.

Dr. Obidike highlighted the state’s progress over the past two years, noting the employment of over 1,000 healthcare workers at primary and secondary hospitals, the renovation and equipping of three general hospitals, and the construction of five new general hospitals in the Anambra North Senatorial Zone. Additionally, the state is renovating and equipping primary healthcare centers and providing pipe-borne water across Anambra.

Governor Soludo is particularly focused on transforming COOUTH into one of Nigeria’s top teaching hospitals, ensuring high-quality healthcare services for all patients. Dr. Obidike expressed gratitude to the hospital’s management and staff for their dedication and sacrifices in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Joe Akabuike, Chief Medical Director of COOUTH, thanked the Governor for his support and assured him of their full commitment to their duties. The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Obiageli Uchebo.
