Despite the Anambra State Government’s commitment to free, quality education from nursery through senior secondary levels, students have voiced concerns over absenteeism and lack of commitment among teachers, especially in crucial subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Investigations reveal that some teachers attend school merely to clock in, leaving students dependent on corps members who may lack adequate teaching experience.
Students across various government schools reported that tests are frequently administered without proper supervision, allowing room for academic malpractice. They explained that teachers often leave the classroom after giving tests, retreating to the staff room without monitoring the exams. This lack of oversight, they said, undermines academic integrity and diminishes the value of their education.
Additionally, students cited instances of teachers using abusive language, assigning excessive punishment, and giving overwhelming homework without providing prior instruction. According to the students, teachers often justify their lax approach by saying, “teaching is conscience-driven,” implying that they feel no obligation to put in extra effort due to the absence of school fees and financial incentives.
In light of these challenges, students are urging the state government to implement daily monitoring teams to oversee teacher performance, particularly in core subjects, to ensure the full realization of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s education policy.
Despite these concerns, students expressed their gratitude to the Anambra State Government for its efforts to promote free education and enhance global educational standards, and they offered their prayers for continued wisdom and vision in leadership.
