Insecurity has become a major problem in Nigeria with every section of the country battling one form of criminality or another.
Speaking earlier today on insecurity in South East geopolitical zone and Anambra State in particular, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo mulled arrangements of his administration to launch a major security initiative next week called Operation Udo G’achi’ which is literally translated as Peace Must Prevail.
Soludo announced this while reacting to questions from Ayo Makinde and Alero Edu on Channels Television Sunrise morning show programme when they inquired to know his efforts at managing security in his State of Anambra.
The Governor said, ” Insecurity is everywhere in the country. But the South East faces a mixture of bare faced criminality and other factors. By Monday or Tuesday next week, we will be launching the operation Udo g’achi – peace must prevail”
According to him, the launch would be a major step towards managing security in the state while the second step would be to “mobilize the people to know that this is nothing but pure criminality”
” State police is an idea whose time has come. You can’t continue living in denial. Yes, people have their reservations for it but you must try it and improve on it. Yes, there might be incidents of abuse but you must try.
Continuing, Governor Soludo highlighted that the issue of ownership was critical stressing that local ownership of security will go a long way in solving the myriads of security challenges facing Nigeria and Anambra in particular.
” Security should be localized. You need to have a conversation as to how the people will take ownership of their security. The criminals are people’s relatives, brothers and others and people maintain a culture of silence because of lack of ownership. So, you need them to own up their security for things to work.”
” It will differ from state to state but let that platform be there. The idea of state police is the idea whose time should have come a long time ago”, he declared.
