Anambra state government through the Ministry of Environment led by the Commissioner, Engr. Dr. Felix Odimegwu had had an all important meeting with Zoomlion Ghana limited, a renowned waste management company in his Jerome Udorji Secretariat Awka. According to him, the three-day visit aimed at reviewing, conducting field assessment on what Anambra has done/been doing in terms of waste management and to ascertain the infrastructure on ground so as to enable them work on providing innovative and sustainable waste management practices in the state.
The Commissioner stated that waste management in the state was being operated manually and would like the zoomlion technical team to bring innovative solution to solid and waste water management, hospital/medical waste and also provide sustainable sewage treatment plants.
He highlighted that the state have incorporated circular economy practices and various Environmental initiatives in the Soludo-led administration which have provided jobs directly or indirectly to citizens (waste to wealth, waste to energy)and that they intend to scale up to what are seen in more developed states like Abuja and some other African countries and assured that Anambra was ready to partner them in that regard.
Mr Opoku Philip, the Zoomlion Project Engineer stated that the team had track records in some African countries and was well grounded in Lagos state.
Mr Opoku stated that they had developed state of the art waste water plant with cistern in each local council in Ghana and have plans to recreate that here in Anambra which will also attract carbon credits.
The zoomlion technical team assured Dr Odimegwu that they would deploy their wealth of knowledge and expertise in providing Innovative Environmental solutions to different waste management concerns in the state.
On his part, Mr Mike Ozoemena, M.D of ASWAMA stated that the state produces almost 1, 500 tonnes of waste daily which requires innovative ideas or solutions on how to manage them effectively, and that the local councils were in charge of waste collection while the Ministry of Environment and ASWAMA cordinates them.
The M.D assured to provide all data, collection capacity/model, waste generation rate and other availabe data that will enable them carryout their work seamlessly
The three days assessment visit which started on 4th-6th march 2025 ended on a good note as the zoomlion technical team, Ministry of Environment and ASWAMA toured Nnewi dumpsite, Onitsha-Owerri road dumpsite, Nkwelle Ezunaka, Awka dumpsite and waste management facilities in the state.
