Anambra youths gathered in Awka to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day, discussing the importance of character in protecting and promoting womanhood for sustainable community progress.
The event, held at Integral Development Konsult (IDK), was convened by youth advocate and broadcaster Mrs. Ify Aronu-Okafor, who highlighted the growing awareness of women’s rights as a factor leading to increased challenges. She pointed to Nigeria’s patriarchal system and legislative policies as major barriers to gender equality.
Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Mr. Chris Molokwu, described women as powerful and emphasized the role of the media in amplifying their voices. He noted that societal structures, including religion and tradition, have not always been supportive of women’s empowerment.
Host and CEO of IDK, Mrs. Chinwe Nweke, urged women to speak out against abuse and emphasized the need for mental health support, warning that untreated psychological struggles among women could negatively impact society.
Dr. Becky Ifunanya-Eze of the Ohaneze Ndigbo Youth women’s wing encouraged women to prioritize self-care and stress management for longevity.
The event featured paper presentations from the Catholic Women Organisation Awka chapter, the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, and health professionals. Among the attendees were ABS representatives Mrs. Ify Unachukwu and Ebele Uzoegbo, alongside male and female youths from across the state.
