In a bid to promote healthy living and youth engagement, the Mayor of Anaocha Local Government Area, Comrade Rome Ibekwe, hosted the ANABIG C Marathon Race 2.0, a sporting event that drew athletes from the ten communities within the local government area.
The 11.2-kilometer race, which started at the Anaocha Local Government Secretariat in Neni and passed through Adazi-Enu, Akwaeze, and Obeledu before concluding in Agulu, was organized in collaboration with BIG C Real Estate and Properties.
The initiative aligns with the Anambra State Government’s focus on sports development, tourism, and the Healthy Living campaign championed by the First Lady of Anambra State, Mrs. Nonye Soludo.
Comrade Ibekwe highlighted the importance of empowering youths through sports, emphasizing that the event provided a platform for engagement beyond the skill acquisition programs already initiated by the state and local government.
Dr. Joachin Aforjama, Managing Director of BIG C Real Estate and Properties, stated that his involvement aimed to promote fitness, health, and inclusion among youths.
Mr. Patrick Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Commission, noted that the event reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing young talents through various sports.
Winners of the race received cash prizes, with Sopulu Okechukwu, Obidi Ikenta, and Kennedy Okechukwu emerging as the top three in the male category, while Amarachi Nwafor, Chinwendu Obinwa, and Chidera Nweke secured the top spots in the female category.
First-place winners in both categories took home ₦400,000 each, while the second and third-place winners received ₦300,000 and ₦200,000 respectively. Consolation prizes were also awarded to other participants.
