In a heartwarming initiative, the Anambra State Signage and Advertising Agency (ANSAA) held the second edition of its white cane campaign, providing 100 visually impaired individuals with white canes equipped with chips. The event aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the visually impaired community in the state.
Barrister Somadina Chukwuemeka, a resource person at the event and himself visually impaired, urged the Anambra State Government to fully establish and adequately fund the state Disability Rights Commission. He emphasized that such a commission could significantly address many of the issues faced by people with disabilities in the region.
Chukwuemeka further highlighted the government’s responsibility to ensure the consistent provision of white canes for the visually impaired, as mandated by the state’s disability rights law. He also called upon the judiciary to prioritize the welfare of visually impaired individuals, advocating for judicial attention to cases involving violations related to the use of white canes.
Reverend Abel Okoye, representing various support groups, encouraged the visually impaired attendees, reminding them that everyone faces challenges in life, and that these experiences can be a source of strength.
The event culminated in the distribution of white canes to the participants, marking a significant step towards enhancing mobility and independence for the visually impaired in Anambra State.
