In preparation for the upcoming September 28 Local Government elections in Anambra State, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has held a crucial meeting with security chiefs to ensure a free, fair, and credible poll. The meeting, which took place at the commission’s headquarters in Awka, aimed to develop strategic security plans to address potential challenges and ensure the safety of the election process, particularly in sensitive Local Government Areas.
Mrs. Genevieve Osakwe, the Chairman of ANSIEC and a magistrate, emphasized the commission’s concern for the safety of its staff, including adhoc personnel, and the citizens who will participate in the election. “We need strong assurances of their safety during and after the election,” she stated, noting that while sufficient security measures are in place, the commission remains committed to the welfare of its workers. She assured that a more robust security presence would be deployed at key flashpoints to ensure the safety of all involved.
Barrister Osita Igbokwe, the commission’s member in charge of Legal Services and Security, highlighted that the meeting is part of the commission’s efforts to collaborate with security agencies to address public anxiety over security concerns. He reiterated that these steps are essential to foster confidence in the electorate and ensure a smooth election process.
Representatives of the various security agencies present at the meeting pledged their full cooperation, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining order and preventing any security breaches across all wards in the state during the election.
