The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State is grappling with internal strife following its governorship primary, with key resignations and defections raising concerns about the party’s prospects in the upcoming 8 November election.
Nicholas Ukachukwu was selected as the party’s gubernatorial candidate, but his emergence has further exacerbated existing divisions within the party.
Oduenyi Ifeanyi, Chairman of the APC in Njikoka, Nimo Ward I, resigned from both his position and the party in a letter dated 11 April 2025. In his resignation, Ifeanyi cited dissatisfaction with the APC’s direction and expressed concerns over the party’s weakening structure in Anambra.
“The APC structure in Anambra is fast collapsing to YPP,” he stated, referencing the recent defection of Paul Chukwuma to the Young Progressives Party (YPP) as a key indicator of the party’s declining influence in the state.
Ifeanyi’s departure, following Chukwuma’s shift to YPP, has ignited speculation that more defections could follow, further undermining the APC’s position in the region.
With the election just months away, analysts warn that the APC must address these internal challenges to avoid further erosion of support and maintain a competitive edge in the race for the governorship.
