The Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA) has taken its campaign for the Tertiary Institutions Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) to students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam Campus.
Addressing the students, ASHIA’s Managing Director, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, highlighted the agency’s efforts to bring quality healthcare services to tertiary institutions in line with national standards. Dr. Onyemaechi revealed that the sensitization exercise had earlier been conducted at the Uli Campus and that the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Kate Omenugha, was instrumental in extending the program to cover all COOU students, including those in Awka, Igbariam, and Uli campuses.
“TISHIP ensures that students receive quality medical care not only at the university’s health center but also at secondary healthcare facilities when referred. This eliminates the financial burden of accessing treatment,” Dr. Onyemaechi explained. He assured students that the program comes at no additional cost and includes a wide range of medical benefits even during holidays.
The ASHIA boss also noted that the agency has begun assessing the needs of medical centers at Igbariam and Uli to equip them adequately for better service delivery. He added that approximately 231,000 residents of Anambra are currently enrolled in the scheme, which prioritizes affordable and accessible healthcare.
Commending ASHIA, Comrade Josephat Ezehiri, the Students’ Attorney General, expressed gratitude, stating, “This program is a welcome development. It provides much-needed medical support without putting a strain on students’ finances.”
With the program in place, COOU students are set to benefit from a robust healthcare system that aligns with global best practices.
