Asisat Oshoala’s debut season with Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has been nothing short of record-breaking. The Nigerian striker capped off her campaign by scoring the first goal in Bay FC’s playoff match against Washington Spirit, though the team ultimately lost 2-1 in extra time, ending their season.
Oshoala joined Bay FC in January after leaving Barcelona and quickly made her mark, scoring the club’s first-ever NWSL goal in their 1-0 victory over Angel City FC. Throughout the season, she consistently led her team, finishing as their top scorer with eight goals—seven in the regular season and one in the playoffs. Her performances at PayPal Park, Bay FC’s home stadium, have made her a fan favorite and solidified her reputation as one of Africa’s most prolific female strikers.
Bay FC’s ambitious approach to their debut season included signing Zambian forward Racheal Kundananji in a record-setting $860,000 transfer. This investment contributed to their strong campaign, finishing 7th in the 14-team league, which earned them a spot in the playoffs.
Oshoala’s career spans impressive achievements across multiple leagues. From her early days winning Nigeria’s Women’s FA Cup with Rivers Angels to her successful stints with Arsenal, Dalian Quanjian in China, and Barcelona, she’s claimed numerous titles, including five Spanish league titles, three UEFA Women’s Champions League trophies, and the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations three times with Nigeria. With 105 goals in 156 club matches, Oshoala has won the African Women’s Footballer of the Year six times, cementing her place as a legend in women’s soccer.
