The anticipated meeting between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government, initially scheduled for Monday, August 26, has been postponed. This was confirmed by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, who announced that the meeting will now take place on Wednesday, August 28. No specific reason was provided for the postponement.
The meeting is crucial as public university lecturers, under ASUU, have threatened to embark on a strike over the federal government’s failure to honor the 2009 renegotiated agreement. The union issued a strike notice following a national executive council meeting held at the University of Ibadan the previous weekend.
ASUU’s demands include increased funding for public universities and a halt to the proliferation of universities across the nation, which they argue dilutes the quality of higher education.
The postponed meeting is intended to prevent the impending strike, which could disrupt academic activities nationwide if not averted. Both parties are expected to address the outstanding issues to reach an amicable resolution.
