The Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) Nsugbe zone, in collaboration with other environmental agencies, celebrated this year’s World Environment Day at Nwafor Orizu College of Education. The event highlighted the significant benefits of maintaining a healthy environment and the crucial role of waste management and environmental sustainability in enhancing public health, economic stability, and overall quality of life.
In her speech, Mrs. Eucharia Attah, Manager of ASWAMA Nsugbe zone, emphasized that maintaining a clean and healthy environment directly impacts community well-being. She commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his commitment to making Anambra a clean, green, and safe environment. Mrs. Attah stressed the importance of effective waste management practices in preventing disease spread and ensuring healthier living conditions, advocating for increased public awareness on maintaining a clean environment.
The event also saw appreciation for the support from stakeholders in Nsugbe community, with Mrs. Attah urging others to contribute to a cleaner society. Chief Eloka Igwemezie, Chairman of the occasion, underscored that cleanliness is not just about aesthetics but about creating a safe and habitable environment for everyone. He noted that proper waste disposal and environmental care contribute to a more prosperous and sustainable society.
Dr. Tina Anyadiegwu, Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, represented by Dr. Law Egbonuche-Okeke, Dean of Student Affairs, expressed gratitude for the awareness initiative and assured the College’s readiness to partner with ASWAMA for a cleaner society.
In a lecture, Mrs. Grace Okpukpara, Head of Environmental and Sanitation Department at Anambra East Local Government Headquarters, called for action towards a cleaner environment in the Nsugbe community. She reiterated the benefits of a healthy environment and announced that enforcement and prosecution would soon commence against those causing environmental hazards.
The event concluded with ASWAMA Nsugbe zone outlining sanitation obligations, offences, and penalties as per the 2015 Waste Management Authority Law.
